LB-LINK BL-M8812EU2 is a powerful 5GHz Wi-Fi module with a Realtek RTL8812EU chip, suitable for building a custom digital video transmission system using OpenIPC or WFB-ng. It is a standalone populated board measuring 32x32mm, connecting to an IP camera or single-board computer via a USB 2.0 interface.
OpenIPC is an open-source project for digital FPV video transmission. It uses IP cameras and Wi-Fi modules to build an HD video link for RC models with relatively low latency. The project is often used for experimental or development FPV systems where full control over both hardware and software is required. In such a setup, the BL-M8812EU2 forms the radio section — as a video transmitter on the model and as a receiver on the ground.
The module operates in the 5150-5850MHz band according to the IEEE 802.11a/n/ac standard in 2T2R configuration (two antennas for both transmitting and receiving). Each antenna path has its own power amplifier (FEM), and the manufacturer specifies a transmit power of up to 29dBm (approx. 800mW). Combined with support for a narrow 10MHz channel, this significantly extends link range. In standard Wi-Fi mode, it supports 10/20/40/80MHz channel widths and speeds up to 867Mbps. For FPV transmission in monitor mode and packet injection mode (rtl88x2eu Linux driver), OpenIPC documentation uses 5, 10 and 20MHz widths; 40MHz currently works for reception only. Antennas connect via two u.FL connectors.
USB signals, power and reset are available on solder pads around the board perimeter and on an FPC connector. The module is powered by a single 5V supply (4.75-5.25V) with current draw up to 1800mA, so we recommend a separate 5V power supply with sufficient current headroom. The power amplifiers generate considerable heat, and the manufacturer specifies an additional heatsink measuring at least 32x32mm with a thermal pad for stable operation. At higher power levels, we recommend a heatsink with a fan. The module is not suitable for reflow soldering — high temperature would damage the thermal pad between the chip and shielding.
Do not enable transmission without connected antennas. The module has no protection against operation without an antenna, and the power amplifier may be permanently damaged.
We recommend OpenIPC for more technically experienced users. Wi-Fi video links are particularly suitable for FPV wings and drones with GPS stabilization. Due to higher latency, the transmission is not suitable for acrobatic freestyle or racing drones.
The package does not include an antenna, heatsink or connection cable.
