Rotorama IST8310 is a miniature external compass particularly suitable for long-range drones with iNav and Ardupilot firmware. The magnetometer senses the Earth's magnetic field, which is very weak and can easily be affected by surrounding electronics, especially power cables from the battery and particularly Li-ion batteries. For this reason, the compass must be placed as far away from surrounding electronics as possible, which is not always feasible when GPS and compass are combined in one module. A separate external compass allows installation of the compass at an ideally distant location (for example, on the drone's leg).
The external compass is built on the IST8310 chip, which is more sensitive and accurate than the most common QMC5883L. Communication occurs via the I2C bus using the pins SCL and SDA. The module has available solder pads to change the I2C address of the compass. This allows for two compasses to be used on one bus.
Thanks to its small size of 10.5x10.5mm and low weight of 0.2g, the module is suitable for smaller drones.
